The Burger- Market Street Kitchen, Scottsdale
This towering burger was supremely satisfying, and very well balanced. The combination of roasted poblano peppers and smokey chipotle aioli enhanced the meaty flavor of the 10oz patty(possibly 12oz in the near future). The grilled onion on top would have been too much to add to the burger, so I took the bartenders advice and alternated bites of burger, and onion. The bun was the perfect size and softness to squish down into a great bite. Very nearly a top contender in town.
Delux Burger- Delux Burger, Scottsdale
Delux Burger has been a staple in the community, and was one of the first on scene with the gourmet burger trend. They set the standard and have kept their burger good all these years. The mix of bleu and gruyere cheese, combined with sweet caramelized onions and crumbled bacon make for a good bite that doesn’t overwhelm the delicious meat. Cooked to a perfect med-rare, this is a solid burger that delivers every time. It’s an elevated burger, but hasn’t continued to evolve from it’s initial concept. Maybe it doesn’t need to.
Zinburger- Zinburger, Phoenix
The Zinburger doesn’t fuss around with lettuce or tomatoes. It’s all about getting a bite of the soft bun, sharp cheese, sweet onions and perfectly cooked med-rare meat. It’s a very satisfying bite of food. It’s the most tender beef patty I’ve had on my tour de beef, and the soft bun really just enhances the experience. The bacon cheeseburger, which I also tried, was terrific as well. Some of the best bacon I’ve ever had on a burger, in fact.
Smokehouse Burger- Bobby Qs, Phoenix
This burger really hits you over the head with smoke, grease and salt, in a great way. Although the burger might not have balance, it is satisfying in a very carnal way. The bottom bun was soaked through with juices, and the burger was a bit overcooked, but I didn’t mind. The crunchy onion strings and bacon combined to make the burger a bit on the salty side, and the cheddar cheese is mostly lost in the mix. It was still extremely memorable for it’s heart stopping meaty goodness.
Know Poblano Burger- Rehab Burger Therapy, Scottsdale
Rehab definitely gives you lots of burger options and I wanted to choose the right one, so I went with the Know Poblano, which the bartender recommended without hesitation. I chose the Pretzel bun, which was a bit more dense than other pretzel buns I’ve had, making it taste more like a soft pretzel, which was not a bad thing. The burger was a juicy med-rare. The grilled poblanos had a nice smokey quality, but the spicy onions and ketchup really brought the heat, in a Sriracha kind of way. The real star of this burger was the thick cut Manchego cheese, which you could easily taste through the heat of the toppings and the tasty patty. A fine burger, and well worth the visit.
Sweet and Spicy- The Grind, Phoenix
The Grind has two locations boasting 1000 degree coal ovens, which is significantly hotter than traditional gas or wood burning ovens. The result is a quick, hard-seared burger with a juicy med-rare center. The giant burger is tricky to eat, and I personally find it to be dominated by the sweet heat of the candied jalapenos. It’s a winner for those who enjoy the kick of a good hot pepper, but overall I find it somewhat out of balance. Still a fantastic burger, but not as satisfying to my personal taste.
